Apologies if this is patronising but maybe you should consider borrowing a VGA 
monitor, not just to check that everything apart from the built-in screen is 
working, but also to make it easier to back up your data to something else, 
such as a stack of CDs, DVDs or an external HD.

(You could start it up in target disk mode, then attach it to another mac via a 
Firewire cable, as another lister suggested. However this necessitates another 
mac with enough space on its hard disk.)

I'd hate to hear of you data going west of the sunset while your Pismo is away 
being resuscitated.
