Have you tried playing these videos in a QuickTime-compatible player
with Perian installed?

For VLC on a G3, you can't run the latest version.  I'm pretty sure that
v8.6i is the latest that will run on G3 hardware.  It is very crashy for
me, though.  Try here:

If Perian works for you, I would suggest a lightweight player such as
QTAmateur,

or if you are not worried about large sizes, you can play videos
directly in the column view of Finder.  Adjust the column width to
change the size of the preview 'icon', and click the play control.

I use these tools to play the flv videos downloaded from YouTube with
acceptable performance on my 400MHz Pismo...
