Really? I think you are misinformed.  DHTML? XHTML? Depends on what you define 
as "HTML" I'm afraid.

Oh, yes it is. CSS is rendered by the browser. Rendering CSS can be incredibly 
processor intensive. CSS can redefine any element in HTML and the browser has 
to make sense of the sea of changes in any of one or more style sheets applied 
to a page. It very much depends on the developer and how much they care about 
their craft.

Javascript. Javascript has nothing to do with Java. Once you start doing round 
trip callback/AJAX based pages, processing JSON or XML as part of dynamic 
requests, yes - things get slow. And potentially breaks your older browser. 
JQuery is another modern technology that will make older browsers crawl - all 
AJAX, dynamic calls, javascript. 

This is ignoring plugins such as Java and Flash.
