Once you start doing round trip callback/AJAX based pages, processing JSON or XML as part of dynamic requests, yes - things get slow. And potentially breaks your older browser. JQuery is another modern technology that will make older browsers crawl - all AJAX, dynamic calls, javascript. This is ignoring plugins such as Java and Flash.
