what kind of software do you intend to run on this iBook?
Generally I would keep OS 9.x, so that I could run plenty of valuable
apps and games pretty fast.
Then I would go with OSX Tiger as the second operating system, updated
to the latest revision 10.4.11 and tweaked some settings like
disabling Spotligt/Dashboard if I found it too slow.

I wouldn't go the Linux route though, because you will probably find
your iBook underpowered (even thought it's not a speed demon "per se")
- slow boot times like 2-3 minutes, not accelerated video and such.
