The FIRST thing I would do is get a good strong flashlight (like a
white LED unit with fresh batteries) and shine it at the screen when
you try to boot the machine.

What you are looking for is to see if the display is actually showing the OS X 
screens but the backlight is off.  Holding the flashlight at
an angle to the screen sometimes makes it easier.

On some of the old black G3 Powerbooks, the display would default to
zero brightness when OS X boots (whereas it would be fine on OS 9).
Playing with the keyboard brightness keys can sometimes wake it up,
but the backlight for the display may also be dead.  If you can see
the normal OS X screens in the display with the help of the flashlight, then 
you know the rest of the machine is OK and booting normally.
