Thanks Bruce. I'm sure have tried a PCMCIA adapter in the past and the 
Pismo wouldn't boot from it... maybe I've just been unlucky with my choice 
of CF cards. Some sources on the net make it sound as if almost any card 
should be bootable, others suggest that the card needs to support 'fixed 
disk mode' and this is increasingly rare in consumer (as opposed to 
'industrial') CF cards.

If I can pick up one of the Firewire adapters cheap enough I may try it 
out, and report back.
