Well, I came across a fair price on an 'industrial' 8GB CF card and on a 
whim I bought it... and while the Pismo still wouldn't boot from this card 
in a PCMCIA adapter, I dug out the CF-IDE adapter I'd given up on ages ago 
and swapped that in in place of the hard disk and what do you know, that 
works. I'm typing this on the Pismo now and still can't get over how eerily 
silent it is :-)

I can't say it's dramatically faster, but just the lack of hard disk 
thrashing noise makes it feel like a different and more usable machine.
