Subject: USB 2.0 to IDE 2.5" HDD enclosure trouble

Plea for ideas on what I am missing in getting an external USB drive
enclosure to work.
I upgraded the hard drive in my G3 Firewire (Pismo) 400 MHz 320MB RAM
so I removed the Fujitsu MRH2010AT 10 GB no jumpers Device 0. So I
thought the smart thing to do would be to get a USB drive enclose
(USAP usb 2.0 mac/pc) and use it for backup or storage.
My problem is that once I connect the enclosure to my desktop G4
Quicksilver it mounts OK but as soon as I attempt to copy anything to
the drive it hangs (freezes finder).
I've tried using both power cable usb (ext switch) and straight usb
cable (int. switch) and I've tried checking the drive with drive
utility (both in OS 10.2.8 and 10.3.2).
I reinstalled the drive in my Pismo and checked it and reformatted it
just to be sure. As soon as it is back in the enclosure it mounts on
the desktop OK but freezes as soon as anything attempts to access it?
What am I missing?
Thanks for any thoughts. Note I already swapped the first enclosure
back since the first one wouldn't even mount on the desktop
(supposedly defective, now I wonder).

Anyhow, concerning your USB-2 freezing problems, I have the same problem and have done a little bit of reading. I haven't been able to get any great answers anywhere but the best thing I've been able to find is that Apple's USB-2 drivers are NOT universal. Apparently they only work well with NEC-based USB2 controller cards. I personally have a VIA-based USB2 card, and I have the same freezes as you. My USB2 devices are recognized and will mount, but any attempt to use the devices will start and eventually freeze. In my situation, it's not worth it for me to buy a different USB controller, so I'll just have to wait for Apple to fixed their half-baked USB2 drivers.

John offered:
Its worth booting in OS 9 and seeing if it mounts and performs.

This came to me from another forum and I offer it here since it may benefit others.
In my situation even though I have an OS9 partition on my Pismo, I hardly ever boot from it and have only one hold over classic application that I use any more.

JPL offered:
Does the USB drive work in 9.2.2? OS 9.2.2 has been criticized for introducing a USB 1.1 bug, but there are apparently work-arounds for this. If interested in trying the USB drive in 9.2.2 (and only if your current software is a problem), Other World Computing has bundled the versions of the 5 Apple USB drivers they say work well with 9.2.2. If you wanted to download/test these drivers, here is the link:
<http://eshop.macsales.com/tech/ftp/usb/usbextensions.sit>

These are the extensions:

USB Support v1.5.6
USB Software Locator v2.0.4
USB Device Extension v2.0.4
USB Mass Storage Support v1.5.6
USB Mass Storage Extension v1.4.1

You would just drag the 5 corresponding extensions from your 9.2.2 Extensions folder to the desktop, drop the OWC set into your Extensions folder, restart to make the extensions active, then test the drive.
