Actually they limited their official support to a whooping 192MB. Back in 1998 that was pretty good. I'm not totally sure why we can now address 512MB, but I suppose it's new chip design that allows for this.


That's 64Mb in the lower slot and 128Mb in the upper.  The lower slot
has less room so you need a low profile module there.  When the
Wallstreet came out these module sizes were the largest available for
their respective sizes.  Apple has traditionally listed the maximum
memory based on memory capabilities available at introduction.  They
also don't update those specs later as larger memory comes along.
While Apple could have designed the Wallstreet for example for 1Gb it
would have been iffy as to whether larger memory would work.  You can
only extrapolate so much about future memory designs.
