Herb - I ran into this problem when trying to install iPhoto 4 myself and it took me a good while to figure it out. If you go to the utilities folder and open Activity Monitor you'll find that an application called "iTunes Helper" is running. Kill this and you should be able to proceed with the iLife program install. At least that's what worked for me. Not that I have any idea what iTunes Helper is nor did I install any such thing.
