This worked for me while waiting for the special delivery NEC Dimms. I was

others were only reading 128MB.

I, too, had a batch of purported 256 MB SDRAMs read only 128 MB, but on a
Rev. 3 Beige MT.
These proved to be "high density" 256 MB SDRAMs, with eight chips on one
side. The board was apparently laid out for 16 total chips, eight on each
side. Therefore, these were a half populated 512 MB SDRAMs (but was reading
only 128 MB).
The dealer replaced these SDRAMs with major brand 256 MB SDRAMs which I had
previously purchased and found to be satisfactory, and all was well.
Although the Beige machines are pretty tolerant of most SDRAMs, there are
those which will appear to be half-populated, even though they are not.
This same situation can exist on the earlier 5 volt-only FPM-only machines
(7200, 7300, 7500, 7600, 8500, 8600, 9500 and 9500), for which OWC and
perhaps others have developed so-called "converted" DIMMs.
These DIMMs utilize high-density chips, which the mobo cannot recognize, but
incorporate special circuitry on the DIMM which makes the mobo accept the
DIMMs as though these were populated with lower-density chips.
