We all have our reasons to hate computer dealers. Condescension leads 
the list: Tough-guy dealer d00dz-- and they are *always* men-- want 
to meke it very clear that *they* know more than *you* do.

And of course they don't particularly give a shit, rather belying the 
attitude above. Case in point: My old coelecanth of a PowerMac 7100 
printed more or less fine to my aging LaserWriter IINT, though it 
would never print a PDF. My new Girl Power iMac could not print to 
the IINT because of the Ethernet/LocalTalk incompatibility.

Dealers consistently told me to:

* buy a new printer
* buy a used printer
* buy a IIg board

A new PostScript Ethernet printer costs $1,100, the same as ten or 
even 18 years ago. Used printers, like IIgs, cost $449. An ink-jet 
printer is quite out of the question. I *did* buy a IIg board offa 
eBay. It did not work, though the seller tested it on return and 
found nothing wrong. (Obviously. And he hasn't refunded my money yet, 
either.)

At no time did any dealer I talked to, or any of my friends, bother 
to mention the AsanteTalk Ethernet-to-LocalTalk adapter, which a 
local dealer (never consulted about my original problem) actually had 
in stock. I got it home and was printing within five minutes. *And* 
it prints PDFs.

I suppose it is banal to complain that dumb-arse dealers wasted my 
time, but that is what they did. They also lost a sale; I would have 
bought the adapter on the spot had anyone mentioned it. I only 
learned about it by stumbling around online.
