Tell me if I got that right, the short version is "don't update the hd
driver when going from 8.6 to 9.1"?

I'd like to know, as I'm about to end this hell of 8.6, - replacing with
9.1, hopefully in a couple of days.

That is MY recommendation.

I made the mistake of failing to invoke the MacOS Install "options" menu and
to "uncheck" the "Update the device drivers" check box.

I did so when I installed OS 9.0.4, which was a RETAIL, hence FULL version.

Sadly, I forgot to do so when I immediately thereafter installed the 9.1
update.

Therefore, the device drivers went from Drive Setup 1.7.3, which is "safe"
for 8.1, 8.5.1 and 8.6 to Drive Setup 2.0.3, which is intended for 9.1, while
skipping Drive Setup 1.8.1, which is for 9.0.x.

I have found that Drive Setup 1.8.1 is "safe" for 8.5.1, and I would assume
it is save for the other MacOS 8's as well.

YMMV, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.

Peter.
