Should be able to plug it in directly, no need for a new cable....unless....apple has remained proprietary with the apple monitor. Most mac monitors are really pc monitors with an adapter to mac cable thrown in. So you can buy and use ANY pc monitor with a mac if you have the little adapter cable. IF the apple monitor is mac out only, then you will still need a mac to vga adapter cable to connect to a pc, but since you've counted the pins and placement and the shape and size seem the same, I would guess your son doesn't even need a new cable unless he has none at all.
