AFAIK there are 3 possibilities. The first is that the monitor needs
to be plugged into a power socket to work. In this case if the power
failed or was disconnected after use it would forget what you set it
to. The second is that it has a battery that powers a small RAM
cluster, like Mac PRAM or PC CMOS-RAM,that stores them. In this case
a shot battery would stop it working. The third, suggested by a
friend, is that it uses EEPROM (electronically erasable programmable
read only memory). These EEPROMs are limited to about 11000 writes in
most cases and it may be that it has reached the end of it's life.

The Blue & White G3 does not cut the monitor power on shut down. I
can vouch for this as I use one and still use the monitor for my PC
even when it is not running. I deliberately didn't plug it into my PC
for exactly this reason (the PC turns all power off on shutdown).
