I guess so.... My Dad ran a training lab for teachers for about 5
years and I have had my fair share of experience of 'oh not another
one!' and 'who the hey set the brightness on this to this level', and
that was TEACHERS! Before that he ran a mobile bus with computers on
that travelled around schools providing them with about 12 computers
that they wouldn't normally have had. These were constantly messed
about with although it often got set back sharpish.
On the subject of ROMs it may be that they use FLASH instead so that
only a small portion of the ROM is rewritten when you only wind the
brightness up by 2% or something silly, it'd seem a waste of time
otherwise. Whatever system the original poster's monitor uses it is
obviously not working and so far we have eliminated mains cut off.
