So far, I've received notes off list from 8 people who say they've received
the same or very similar blank email messages from sources they never heard
of before with just an attachment and a dire request of some type to open it
contained in the subject. Most of the attachment have been these .pif type
files, but there have been a few .exe, .cfg, .wve, .mve files. I believe
there were 2 other types one person also mentioned receiving that weren't
mac files, but I don't recall the suffix. Mine have all said the same
thing," the audio or video portion of the file has been corrupted and can't
open on this machine" or words to that effect. I haven't subscribed to
anything that I know of, I do enjoy going down the list of email and
browsing through some of the ads and such, but my subscriptions are pretty
limited to this list, Versiontracker, Mac Tidbits, CNET and ZDNET weekly
updates, and a couple of sites like iwon.com and jackpot.com for lottery
playing. that's about it. I do seem to get a ton of junk mail, almost 350
+ per day, but I don't subscribe to it. I've deleted those letters many
times before I read I shouldn't do that. I used to hit the "remove me"
button so they would not send my some of that junk, but they still do.
I was just concerned after getting all of these and then somehow 4 of the
.pif files got tracked back to a person or organization who either uses that
same website that generated that article I pointed out yesterday, or somehow
was affiliated with it. I don't know how those things work, but this friend
swears that when he started tracking the addesses, he had to work at it for
quite a while, but somehow he came up with an address that had something to
do with that church site. When I read that article, albeit as ridiculous
and insane as it sounds, I've personally never witnessed anything like that
before. I really got upset at what they were saying about Mac and Mac users
and when I got a message from 2 people saying that they had received a link
in their emails that took them to that article, I thought that maybe whoever
was responsible for authoring it was possibly targeting Mac users or members
of this or any other Mac list to send them these .pif and related
attachments in the emails in an attempt to start some type of virus or
something. My main concern was to warn and to see if anyone else was
getting bombarded. There were some others, but so far it hasn't been to any
great extent. I that article is a hoax, so be it. I've began to try to
access some of the sites mentioned last night where it was described as a
hoax, and while a few say it is, there are a good deal of people who felt
that it might not be and they were just as concerned as I was that someone
or some group could be so hateful and slanderous. One person wrote to me
last night and said they had been in contact with Apple in Dallas about this
and that they were aware of it and were "concerned and taking a serious look
at it" whatever that means. I'm glad you haven't gotten any of these, I
haven't figured out filtering yet on my O.E. 5.04 but it's something I think
I should try to do to stop getting so many of these things.

Ron Ward
