I actually managed to surprise myself today. I installed YellowDogLinux 2.2 (damn, that was a hassle) and it had my KDS Avitron AV7TF (17" Trinitron tube, max = 1280*1024 @ 60Hz) running at 62.4 KHz horizontal & 70 Hz vertical (according to the little pop-up menu on the monitor) at 1152*864. I have actually seen a _third_ combo with 75 Hz I believe (running YDL 2.1 when I finally got 1152*864 to work).
Right now I'm running HF 68.6 kHz VF 75 Hz 1152x864 in OS X (& have the same rates in OS 9).
