possibly, a higher refresh than it's rated for might cause more heat,
but i wouldn't expect the damage to show up as a color problem, i'd
expect a deflection problem since that's the part you are straining
(i.e. the electronics that move the beam across the monitor face). most
likely the kds monitors are just junk.

the part of the electronics that drives the color information to the
picture tube also generates considerable heat and they likely the
manufacturer didn't provide enough heatsinking for it, it's not an
unusual problem. how did the other monitors die? you may have driven
color data too fast to the crt and helped speed the death of the cathode
drivers (the part that drives the color guns in the picture tube) but i
doubt it, you are actually driving color information at a lower speed
than you would be at the higher resolution and slower refresh that kds
recommends.

you may be putting a greater strain on the vertical deflection, which
would in turn put a heavier load on the power supply, which might
explain the color problems. i doubt the high refresh is causing the
problem, but it just might.

you should be able to run at a lower resolution and lower refresh rate,
you may have to select "all" in the monitors control panel for
resolutions.

is the monitor in a hot environment? have you accidentally impaired
heat flow out of the monitor by placing things on top of it or under
cooling vents on the bottom or sides? is it in a dusty environment
(dust aggravates heat problems)?
