It's rather amusing because I do see the analogy (not homology) and find it
quite compelling.

Is there any particular reason they *shouldn't* apply? Squatters and
poachers seem to be a serious problem when renewals don't happen so there
has to be a better mechanism to either (a) ensure that expired URLs can go
back to the operator of the site, regardless of the unscrupulous behaviour
of registrars or, (b) prevent the situation from happening at all.
