not even close to a clean install. you'd be better off deleting the preferences (sometimes they get corrupted and cause problems) but it's more likely the classic pram battery problem. which preferences is it losing? some parts of the pram are more sensitive than others (due to random variations during chip making) and the clock isn't always the first to show it. the best way to avoid having to do clean installs is to get the system running the way you like it and back it up, then you can selectively restore things from the backup. i doubt any of the extensions or other software is corrupted, that's not normal behavior for corrupted software, it would likely cause things like crashes and other more extremely bad things. one other thing that may help would be running norton etc. over your drive, although that's probably not the real problem either.
