Have you rebuilt the desktop?. It's a good idea for all posters of problems
w/ their machines to tell us what theyve already tried to remedy the
problem. Delete your Finder preferences, also replace the battery if it's
more than 3 yrs old.
 I would strongly consider getting an OS 9 disk and installing it while
youre at it instead of reinstalling OS8. You're probably going to want to
eventually run software that will require it anyway. That would definitely
fix any OS problems.
