how far are you from the telco's switching office?  if it's more than 3
or 4 miles (i think that's right) you won't see much speed increase
anyway, 56k only works if you're close to the telco's switching gear,
like all high speed modems it actually test the line and does the best
it thinks it can reliably, actually changing speed up and down as line
conditions change.
