If you have SCSI peripherals it used to be (many moons ago) a good idea to
turn them on before you power-up the computer, and off after power-down of
the computer. Monitors, and FireWire and USB peripherals *should* be 100% ok
with "flipping the switch" on the powerbar (unless said peripheral has a
special requirement like the Epson printer).

As to the battery in computer problem -- I'm not sure if the computer
actually relies on the mains to keep time even when plugged in. My computers
don't ever get unplugged but once in a blue moon a battery does need to be
replaced (usually $7-10 CDN).
