Nothing you've described in the last week requires any command line use, whatsoever. You've had a file system problem, which the repair utility bundled with OS X can't fix. That utility is essentially the same as OS 9's Disk First Aid and a little better than the command line fsck (which, for HFS disks, is a subset of disk first aid without the GUI). If you had a similar problem under OS 9 -- and you certainly could -- you would still not be able to fix it without 3rd party utilities.
This is not to say that OS X doesn't need improvement. Users should be able to automatically back level after system updates that don't work out for them. Or, it should, at least, be a trivial matter to restore a back up. And, it should be possible to selectively install or reinstall without formatting the partition and starting from scratch, which is the officially supported strategy. Apple should addresses legitimate issues. On Saturday, July 6, 2002, at 11:47 AM, Nick Harman wrote: >> From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Bill Jurgenson) >> >>> its driving me mad all this.
