Took the words out of my mouth. I've commented before on this thread,
and I can't help doing it again. Since going to X, I 've not had ANY
repair problems save having to reinstall on account of a wanky SCSI
drive, at which time I changed right to a 20gig IDE, and threw out both
9gig uw SCSI drive that were in the B&WG3 when I bought it. The setup
worked alright with 9xx, but X is more exacting with SCSI, apparently.
Because of all the bad pres X has been getting in the various list since
it came out, I was afraid to install it on my original iMac 233/96mb.
After some experience with the G3,
I decided to take the plunge. I backed up the files to CD, erased and
reformatted the HD, and immediately installed 10 from the CD, going
through all the upgrades to 10.1.5.
The iMAc has never run better - or faster. What can I say? An iMac that
doesn't crash?? yup.
I don't know diddlysquat about UNIX commands. What for?
X is so easy as it is, that I haven't had to use the terminal even once.
Had to mind you. I do use it occasionally, and am slowing learning about
command line. Never too old to learn...
The discussion reminds me of my neighbor who never, ever reads
directions. When the cordless phone ( new, dect, and not too simple)
doesn't do what she wants, she presses a few buttons - does this long
enuf 'til it really doesn't work. Then she comes over to get me to fix
it. Said she couldn't receive any calls: that dxxx thing was set to not
ring! She kept griping about the answering machine - I said what
answering machine, you don't own one: the provider mailbox had also been
activated.
She kept blaming everything on the "new" and "complicated" ISDN
connection and the telephone router. No problem with either but the
handset had to be reset, and the mailbox deactivated. Her comment: where
did that come from, I didn't order it...
Mindset is the problem, not reset or setup or OS.
