there are also allot of major problems with maxtor's warranty service if it's not convenient for them, see my previous extended ranting about how i had to beat a replacement out of them. for what it's worth, i had a 60 gig maxtor in my graphite g4 die the same way when it was a few months old, did get it to come back long enough to transfer my files, but then it died completely. since it was still under apple warranty i got a replacement maxtor, but i also bought a 60 gig quantum (yes, now owned by maxtor, but still a quantum design, if i had it to do over again i'd have paid the extra $10 for ibm) to get me back up quickly and because i wanted another drive. i ran extensive bench mark test on both drives, same spindle speed, definitely not the same drive, the quantum seems to have a better caching algorithm, it was substantially faster for medium size transfers, both drives being essentially equal for very small or very large transfers where you are mostly waiting for the heads to move and the platter to come around. for what it's worth, most drive makers have had problems with some particular models and from time to time. most makers have been terrible about caring once it's out of warranty, or have simply given people more garbage drives under warranty until it wasn't the makers problem any more.
