Hi -- Just to follow up on the thread I started a couple weeks ago... The Maxtor was indeed dead, nothing could even detect it, and it started producing a sort of burning smell (self-cremation?) I just received a replacement yesterday, no hassle except a slight delay because they were out of stock. I've been asking everyone I know who might have an opionion: Maxtor and WD head the list of favorite drives in this unscientific survey. Thanks for all your advice and help. Shirley
