If I may be so forward as to suggest something, I would recommend that
both of you should run "CPU Monitor" and set the icon to the Extended
view. Set CPU Monitor to start on login, and watch what happens when
things are really slow.

OS X has a well-known problem with starting multiple apps at once: OS X
is VERY slow at that for some reason. When you start an application,
you will notice that CPU usage goes to 100% for a short time, then drops
off significantly. If you start a second application during that short
time that CPU usage is at 100%, you will notice that the CPU usage will
_stay_ high for a disproportionately LONG time.

Do you start lots of programs on login? If so, you are probably seeing
the results of this well-known problem of starting multiple apps at
once. If possible, trim your "login items" to the smallest list
possible, and start applications one at a time -- things will run much
smoother that way.
