The IDE standard actually implements what was provided in Western Digital's WD-1003 conroller, which was the first PC/AT disk controller, circa 1984. Since then lot has happened, as disk drives then could transfer about 250 kilobytes/second, whereas now they can transfer about 133 to 160 megaytes/second.
