The limit appears to be four such cards, in, say, a 9600.

If you max-out one bus controller using three of them, then the other bus 
controller can only handle one.

I think this is a boot-time limitation, something akin to the "mount queue" 
at boot time, which limits the number of logical partitions on all mounted 
drives to something like 15 or 20.
