Here's a question of profound ignorance: If my G4
has an Ultra ATA port on the motherboard, why do
the advertisements for ATA hard drives say an ATA
card is needed?
Because on many macs, the bus will not give the performance rated on the box without an add-in card. If your bus suports ATA 133 then the drive will perform to the specs on the box. If not the drive will be constrained by the bus. But any ATA drive will plug into any ATA interface.
