You can certainly connect the scanner, but finding a X driver may be a 
problem. VueScan will do it, but it costs almost as much as a new USB 
Canonscan. I decided to put my MicroTek out to pasture for that reason, 
but worked well under VueScan in demo mode.
The serial port is a different question, there are USB serial adaptors 
such as the Keyspan, and I have that in use as well to connect my aged 
telephone system  for config purposes. It should handle the printer 
alright. If you have more than one computer in use, I would seriously 
conseider finding a printserver for the thing, and then connecting it 
via ethernet.
