About how much would that hardware cost now? What would be the dollar equivalent on a Mac? I have a Quicksilver PowerMac 733 with 640megs of ram. That used to encode mp3's a little faster, around 9.4x under Mac os 9. My speed under X has been slower, less than 8x. I think I have something going on in the background that's taxing the cpu. When I run AIM, my mp3 encode rate drops to around 4.5x. I've been told that it's the stock & news tickers on AIM that are slowing thing down. Is there any other encoder on Mac that might be faster? Has anybody here tried Audion? MP3 encoding is a fair test because it's something we all do and it's easy to benchmark, but my big complaint is in the sluggish html rendering on Mac. I really hope that gets fixed in Jaguar. MS Office is also much faster on Wintel systems than Macs. The third area of performance concern for Macs is in gaming. The kids who adults look to for advice on computers are all gamers and Macs are behind in this area. Changing to a new cpu family will take several years. In the meantime, Apple will have to squeeze out more performance by improving the o/s code and maybe even producing a quad G4 system. The new cases look like they're vented for displacing a whole lot of heat. ;-) -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
