It's no mystery.  Motorola chips are cheaper than Intel.  Apple needs to
make $300 -$1,000 on each cpu they sell in order to pay for the development
of the o/s.  That's why they killed the clones.  Microsoft has so much
volume that they only need around $50 per cpu.  There really hasn't been a
compelling alternative to the PowerPC yet.  Remember it will cost a fortune
to rewrite code for a new cpu and all the apps will have to be rewritten too
(except basically the cocoa ones).  I think Steve Jobs' plan is to get the
Mac user base over to X, get the apps written in platform agnostic api's,
and then they can look at the desktop version of IBM's Power4 or whatever
else can give the most bang for the buck.
