Yes, but X won't boot from a SCSI CDRom. I also think that the installer
doesn't like the stock SCSI bus. Use IDE drives during the install process,
and the SCSI will probably work later on (I use a SCSI CDRW on the stock
bus, but again X won't boot from it).

Just break down and get the IDE drives for you beige. A 20GB IDE drive is
cheap, and likely found for under $100. You'll probably even see a jump in
responsiveness since the IDE bus is a bit faster.

I've only gotten the beige systems to boot to the installer using the C key.
These systems don't work with the "option" boot that the newer systems use,
you won't get the graphical screen with available startup disks. This isn't
a feature of the beige G3, though I think it is available starting with the
B&W and iMacs. This is probably the reason that selecting the X install CD
as a boot drive in the Startup Disk cp or in System Disk 2.6.2 doesn't work.

Yes, with 'Eks'. It will work, but just because our beige systems are
"supported" doesn't mean that it will work with every hardware combination.
Beige owners have a few more options with the stock machine than B&W and G4
owners, namely the option to connect SCSI devices directly to a logic board
connector. Since the stock G3 doesn't include SCSI drives (other than Zip
drives on some systems), the installer wouldn't necessarily be able to
install to a SCSI drive or boot from one. As beige owners, we just have to
work a little harder to make sure we have hardware that will work.

By the way, OS X will also have problems if your drive (IDE or SCSI) is
corrupted or failing. 9 tends to be a little more forgiving in this area.
