i routinely get about 22,222 bits/second on a 26k dialup connection, i.e. 6 minutes per megabyte, rarely more than 10 minutes per megabyte, with ftp or http transfers. i'm using a gport serial port and a serial modem, over a terrible phone line (rarely gets over 26.6k connection). i'd love cable, except for the price and near total lack of security/privacy, you almost may as well invite neighborhood hackers to borrow your computer. people on cable modems regularly report 3-4 incursion attempts per day, what's worse is there's no way of knowing if you're being spied on or not unless something bad happens. true that any decent online store will encrypt things, but that hardly helps with your private email or people following you around on the web to places you'd prefer you're neighbors not to know about. just imagine your' neighbor coming over because their underage kid is tapping into the porn you're downloading, as just one scenario (yes, you may not visit porn sites, but you may visit other sites you don't want monitored/captured by local high school kids or nosey neighbors, after all, bush would like us all to spy on our neighbors, and if you honestly don't think you have anything to hide, take off the blinders, some people are incredibly intolerant and suspicious).
