I had this problem of noise and the spindle starting/stoping when I had
a generic IDE 8X CDROM in my beige G3. I was using CDROM toolkit for
the driver and I could hear the drive start/stop when I imported audio
in iTunes. Getting hold of an Apple 24X solved the problem.
