First Apple needs to do this to force the death of Mac OS 9, if they
allow Mac OS 9 to live on Mac OS X will not get the resources from
developers it needs to succeed in the long-term. Second Apple will be
able to now make Mac OS X only hardware they won't have to build in
support for Mac OS 9 which one would think would bring performance
benefits.
