I just read this on the Forum boards on MacinTouch. It really sounds
like Apple needs to address the issue, and clarify the matter for those
who need to run OS 9. I'm not one of them, but I'm an understand kind
of guy.

I'm incensed after calling Apple technical support today to check that
the new PMG4 dual 867 would run OS 9 without any problems. This what
Apple told me.

1) The PM was NOT designed to run OS 9, which he claimed had been
dropped over a year ago (I'm sure 9.2.2 came out more recently than
that!)
2) If I used it under OS 9 the 2nd processor would be disabled.
3) If I used it under OS 9 the power management would not operate at
all, lacking the necessary driver. The result would be that the fans
would be on permanently, shortening the usable life of the computer.
4) If I used the machine under OS 9, Applecare would not cover me for
any damage to it. Moreover, the tech support guy said that he wouldn't
even sell me Applecare, having heard my intentions.
5) If I looked in the PowerMac manual, all of these details would be
there. They're not.

I rang up the reseller who'd sold me the PM which was to be used to
serve a MacAdministrator network. He spoke to the senior technician
there who said that this info was bull, and that the OS does not affect
Power Management. System profiler showed the working second processor
under OS 9 also.

This kind of deliberate misinformation is extremely worrying, as it
shows Apple's desperation to get people using 10.2 whether they like it
or not. It's this kind of underhand behavior that causes people to jump
ship to another platform, not stick with Apple, and ultimately is a
surefire way of facing law suits for misrepresentation.
