it's far, far worse than that. apparently there is a major flaw in the
power manager such that if you go to x after using 9, the fans won't run
at all and the machine will try to self destruct! this is clearly,
clearly a design flaw. the idea that older software could actually
damage hardware is ridiculous, i've never, never heard of such a problem
before. what's worse, is that os 9 will run, but the problem comes when
you try to use the "sanctioned" software after using os 9. this is not
how a well designed machine should work. if it won't run os 9, that
should be clearly stated. that it will run 9, apparently without
problems, and then self destruct if you go to x is clearly, clearly a
major design flaw, apple should be fully liable for it and should fix it
quickly! in the past many people have run older versions of the os on
machines than what they came with, sometimes the machine won't boot or
function with too old an os, that's fine, and to be expected. what
shouldn't be expected is for the older software to appear to run but
ruin the machine. what's completely absurd is that the old software
will run fine but running the newer software later causes a problem!
this is just the type of problem that will have people running away from
the mac.

it's perfectly fine if machines won't boot into 9 now, or in the future,
it's not fine for things to appear to be ok until you boot into x and
the machine fails, possibly fails very expensively! after all, it could
be the dual processor module that dies first, hopefully the power supply
fan is still controlled by the power supply itself, as it should be.

in this case the user has not abused the machine or done anything wrong
or unusual, apple should fix it immediately, and should fix the machines
already shipped so this does not happen, and they should apologies from
the heart for this design flaw. frankly, it terrifies me that the power
manager is so frail that it can easily be corrupted enough that it won't
run the fans when it needs to, it's only a matter of time before people
find another program that does this accidentally, or someone writes a
virus, or that an improper shutdown or crash accidentally triggers this.
sometimes when machines crash preferences and memory locations get
messed up, it's not unreasonable to think this might also confuse the
power manager since it is obviously so easy to confuse it in a very,
very bad way. apple should not only fix it under apple care, and fix it
so it won't happen again, they should fix it on any machine sold this
year for a long time into the future, just like they did with the
defectively designed and assembled monitors they were selling at one
time, or were those monitors failing because people were using the wrong
os or occasionally using them on a pc?
