if they did it's damn foolish, and the sort of thing that would drive people away from the mac. we're not talking about the machine not running os 9 and the system saying so, we're talking about it appearing to run os 9 ok, and then when you go back to os x, the "sanctioned" os the machine self destructs. any electronics, much less a several thousand dollar computer that self destructs so easily is clearly defective and will drive consumers away in droves.
it's like a dishwasher that catches on fire if you put a pan up on the glasses shelf, a perfectly normal thing to do that appears to work, and shouldn't cause a problems on the next "normal" load. people are missing the point, the point isn't that os x is great, it's not that there's no reason to run os 9 (and there are many reasons to run it), the point is that os 9 appears to work but booby traps the machine for self destruct if you go back to os x. the hardware has a major flaw. it's such a big flaw that i'd never trust the fans even running nothing but x all the time, there is some bug in the power manager that will let the machine run without fans under some conditions, that simply should not happen no matter what the user does, short of deliberate tampering with the hardware or the power manager software that's burned into it! i mean really, why would any one want to watch a black and white movie on tv when so many have been colorized? how would you feel if you watched an old movie or beta video tape on your tv, and then on watching a normal color program the tv did a self destruct? that's precisely the type of thing the new macs do. if i had a stack of cash, i wouldn't be buying any new macs until this bug was fixed. it will bite people in the back side, it will make customers mad, it's not reasonable behavior for any hardware, much less a mac which is touted as being easier to use, i think i'd rather risk getting a blue screen on a pc than a melt down on a mac, especially since some are in offices etc. where no one would notice the fans not running on one machine over the office noises and noises of other machines, not to mention that some users wouldn't be that observant anyway, and gee, some are even deaf. to put it another way, most toasters aren't meant for bagels, but you can use them on bagels, and then on regular bread, if they worked great on the bagel but burnt the house down the next time you put in a slice of wonder bread i think there'd be considerable consumer outcry. /rant on+. this list could greatly benefit from people reading and thinking more carefully and logically. sometimes it's sounds like religious factions battling it out. it's technology, it's not that hard.
