Hello. I am new to this list, so advise me on how to submit and to whom. I have a G3 that I bought 2 or 3 years ago. It cane ith OS 8.1, and 32 MB of memory. I was aware that there would be limits as to what I could do with that little memory. The OS took 12 mb, and AOL 4 takes 16 mb, so accessing the web is nearly impossible,
The Mac monitor finally bit the dust, and I had to buy a NEC PC type monitor to replace it. The screen size is nice, but it aint a Mac monititor! Also purchased a 56k modem, and decided to install 3-256 mb memory boards. Thing are worse now. The OS took 12 mb, but now takes 26.6. All application crap out with memory errors. I installed RAMDisk, gave it 24 mb, installed and ran apps from there. Ofcourse, RAMDisk gets emptued when you shutdowm, and you have to reinstall everytime you boot. But apps still bombed anyway. I am running AOL 4 and Explorer 4, because there was only 32 mb of memory, and newer apps would not run as they all require more memory. AOL 3 took 8 mb, AOL 4 takes 16, AOL 5 takes 32, AOL 6 takes 64, and AOL 7 takes 128 mb. Daah! Aparent;y there are more versions of Mac G3/G4 memory that there is womrns underwear. The $64,000 question is: what memory should you install in a particular Mac. Nobody knows, not the supplier, not Mac, so here we are on this web site. Aparently there is 32-bit addressing and 64-bit addressing, and then there is just plain old memory. What belongs in this thing? Is there a diagnostic of some kind that can tell me what this Mac really is, and what memory to install? The OS took 12 mb, now takes 26 mb, so something is screwed up here. Why did memory requirements double and tripple after installing: three SimpleTech P/N STA-PMG3/256, Power Mac G3 SYNC modules? Is there a book somewhere that lists all of the hundreds of G3 types that were made in the last 10 years, and what mmory each different one uses? I could order every type of 256 mb memory cards, and see which one works. But that's a bit of overkill. The 'About this computer' indicates that 768 mb has been installeIs there a problem with memory management and disk table management with OS 8.1? The reason I ask is, I also had a strange problem earlier, where an 'alias' file became over 3 GB (that's gigabyte) in size. Obviously that an error. But this file could not be destroyed, put it in the trash, empty the trash, and its still there. I moved and purged files, and the alias file got bigger. my assumption isL the addressing numbers fir this file were actually for the freespace table, as Norton was able to defragment the disk. The OS and all application had to be reloaded. Things like freespace table can not be fixed on a Mac, only on minicomputers, which I have worked on as a system manager. That's a story for anchienthistory now, If you have any suggestions, let me know. Nortin DiskDoctor and Speed Disk are run daily. No effect on memory. I rebuild the desktop regulary. No change in memory either. Do I need OS 8.6, 9, or X? What else will become unuseable after that upgrade. Would it be cheaper to throw away this confusedcomputer, and spend $4,000 on a new one with memory, etc? David Blish -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
