Last week I had my OSX 10.2.2 install on my beige G3 get corrupted.
The machine would only boot into the UNIX command line with no GUI.
It was not single user mode but darwin loading with the finder
nowhere to be found. I trashed prefs and did all the tricks listed in
the apple TID's to no avail.

I have spent so many years fooling around in the system folder under
Mac classic OS's that just seemed the normal way to go about fixing
it.

A tidbit in -Mac OSX the missing manual- saved me. Under OS9 the
apps have many fingers in the system folder and the OS and that is
what I was used to but under OSX they do not. So a complete reinstall
of the OS can be done without affecting my apps OR docs.

That was a real mind shift for me.

No fear of blowing out all my settings and prefs? Whaoa!

I booted from my OSX install disk and selected the option to use the
current user accounts on the drive and installed a fresh copy of the
OS. Then I patched the install to the latest version.

Not one app or doc or user account was affected and everything rolls
on just fine. Amazing. My drive was fully restored to the way it was
before the problem.
