I have an OrangeMicro USB/Firewire combo card in my beige G3 DT. The USB
ports worked fine in OS8.6 and 9.0 with the PCI card support extensions
downloaded from Apple. It also works fine with OS9.1 which has built-in PCI
card support. It also works fine in OSX.2 and OSX.2.1. But it does NOT work
with OS9.2 or 9.2.2 with or without the added card support extensions. Go
figure. I don't have any Firewire devices to test those ports.

So, I wonder if you have tried using the USB cards with OS9.0/9.1?
