I had this exact problem a few weeks back. I bought a used USB Kensington Orbit
trackball, which worked at the shop on a recent iMac with no Kensington software. On
my Beige G3, System Profiler recognized it but I couldnt get it to work. At startup,
the computer asked for the Kensington USB software even though it was installed in the
extensions folder.

I tried everything - of course a clean install of the the most recent Kensington
software [5.7], downloading and installing USB Update 1.4.1, rebuilding the desktop,
swapping out USB cards - but nothing worked. Even Kensington thought the device was
malfunctioning and offered to replace it.

I finally tired a clean install of OS 9.1 and then immediately upgraded to OS 9.2.1,
all with the trackball plugged into the USB card. After the 9.1 installation I had no
movement of the trackball, after 9.2.1 it worked, even without the Kensington software
installed. Ive been using it with the Kensington software ever since.
