Thanks for the info---if I understand-- what I need is 16 x 16 or 16 chips (8 on each side) with 16 mb /chip. If my memory is correct, what I bought & returned fit your description. I wonder if all Kingston RAM is like this now and what I bought before was an older version. At least now I will know what to look for.

The maximum, per chip, is 16 MB. So, if your memory module has 8 chips, the greatest amount of memory that will be seen is 128 MB. To be seen as 256 MB, the module would have to have 16 chips. In listing memory, vendors have a variety of ways to specify the density, but most often they will represent it in terms of A X B, where A is the amount of memory per chip and B is the number of chips on the module.
