In my case, my FW-mounted hard drive became unreadable and I was unable to recover it using the tools at hand, which include DiskWarrior. I was eventually able to repartition it under OS 9 (even that wasn't simple), but that new partition would not mount under OS X. Trying to force it to mount would wreck all sorts of havoc. So, I turned it off and went looking for alternatives*.
After installing the combo card, I was immediately able to partition and format the drive under OS X and it has worked without incident, since. I primarily use it for Virtual PC volume files and short term storage for collecting things to burn to CD or DVD. *I'm not sure there's anything inherently wrong with the FW modules on the B&W, but they have a high failure rate. Moreover, failures -- of all sorts -- are far more likely to be a problem under OS X than OS 9. People who have a critical need for PCI slots might want to consider a replacement FW module, instead of a PCI card. I saw quite a few available at a surplus vendor (online) a month of two ago for $20. I almost went that way, but, as I consider the B&W USB to be flakey, as well, and knew I'd want USB 2.0, anyway, I opted for the combo solution.
