Aloha
I have been using the Orange Micro plus firewire / USB 2 card
with no problems at all for several years and the original orange
micro usb 1.0 / firewire card before that until I sold that G3.

Upgrading the chip to the 300 or higher G3 will help. There
have been a lot of Apple G3 chips for sale here and there on OWC and
MacResque now and then. What will help is to make sure there is 1mb
backside cache. I took my rev.1 266/512 to 300/1mb and it was
very noticable. Chips are available up to 500mhz.....too. To me the
benefit of getting an Apple chip is that it is basically a simple
plug except for the needed pin changes on the block.

If you haven't upgraded your video board, the cheapest boost
is adding the extra 4mb of ram ...runs around $10-15.... or if you
want speed and the ability to use a flat screen get a different
board.....

Getting rid of that slow 4 gb original HD and getting one of
the 7200 drives will make a huge difference too. Getting one of the
hd's that has the 8mb cache will help too

A simple way to transfer the data off the old drive to the
new is to replace the old drive with the new one, start up on the OS
cd....install the CD... shut down the computer and pull out the CD
drive and put in the old drive in its place temporarily. Transfer
the data and replace the cd drive. Make sure the drive settings on
the HD's are correct.....

You can upgrade to a G4 chip..... If you are going to use OSX
or photoshop type programs, you might want to go that route. There
is some software that has to be installed to enable the cache.

Hope this helps..

Steve
