Hi all,

I know this question has been asked by others a hundred times, but
I'm going to risk derision to ask again. I value the opinion of the
subscribers to this list and would appreciate feedback to save me a
lot of time and effort doing the research myself. I am contemplating
making the switch from OS9.2.1 to OS X on my beige G3 desktop, and I
have the following questions.

But first, here are the basic specs. I have a 300 MHz, G3 desktop.
It has 224 MB of RAM and a 4 GB hard drive with 0.9 GB available
space.

1. When I read quickly through the installation instructions, I seem
to remember that I need 1.8 GB of free space on my hard drive. Is
this just for installation? Could I remove some stuff temporarily
until the installation is completed, or does OS X need all of the 1.8
GB to "reside."

2. If I need more hard drive space, can I just buy another
small/cheap internal drive and install it? If so, should I be
looking for an ATA drive?

3. I know I probably need more RAM, but can I get by with 224 MB?

4. And finally, if I am able to install OS X, will the performance
be significantly worse than OS 9? In other words, is my machine too
slow to run OS X properly (without frustrating me constantly)? Maybe
this question should have been first.

Thanks in advance,
Andy
